Qalawun Mosque is near Khan Il Khalili market in Cairo. It almost glowed with the light frosting of yellow sand that was always present in the city. In 1285 it was the wonder of the contemporary Islamic world because it was constructed in just one year. It was said that every visitor to Egypt made a special point of seeing the hospital, and the fountains that trickled with the comforting sound of rushing water, as musicians played in the courtyard, both working to sooth the sick. This painting was done before it's recent restoration.
